DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION
The Episcopal Actors' Guild’s toolkit of safety-net services addresses our clients' most basic needs while advancing diversity and social equity in NYC's performing arts community. Most of our clients are members of groups that have historically had fewer professional opportunities in the field, received lower wages, and/or had less access to the financial cushion of generational wealth. Our assistance helps them to bridge the inevitable gaps that occur in arts careers, providing an opportunity for them to continue to practice their craft without losing their housing, going hungry, and/or discontinuing or delaying needed medical care.
In 2020, EAG made a commitment to reduce barriers to access to our programming, increase diversity in leadership, amplify the voices of BIPOC artists, and further advance antiracism. As part of that initiative, we appointed a DEI Committee. In August 2020, we introduced SUSTAINABLE CONVERSATIONS, a monthly Zoom forum that provides a safe space for ongoing conversations centered on race and racism in America and the arts. We introduced a column (DIY WITH DEI) in our newsletter that is dedicated to sharing social equity resources. Our OPEN STAGE space grants, BARBOUR PLAYWRIGHTS AWARD, ARTIST AFTERNOON workshops, and SUSTAINABLE CONVERSATIONS were either developed by or continue in collaboration with the same diverse groups of performing artists that make up our client base.
In November 2021, the Episcopal Actors' Guild received one of New York Innovative Theatre Awards' inaugural Indie Theatre Champion Awards, "honoring those who rose to the occasion during this time of crises from the pandemic and the fight against white supremacy." EAG was recognized for our emergency response during COVID and for our DEI initiatives.
